New UK auction record set at Fantastic Fifty Southdown Sale

The Fantastic Fifty Sale of Southdown females from the Brant and Chaileybrook flocks of Sid Cook and Jonathan Long respectively took place on 25th November 2017.

The sale saw a new female breed record set at 2500gns, with this being the highest priced Southdown sold at auction in the modern era.

Leading the trade was a shearling ewe from the Chaileybrook offering, Chaileybrook 16/00018, a daughter of TC10187 ‘Sarkozy’ out of a daughter of TC4028 ‘The Frog’ and in lamb to Poillot 40036 ‘Percheron’. This gimmer had been shown once being reserve interbreed at Tenbury this summer and sold to Tom Sinden, Brenzett Green, Kent.

Second best at 800gns was another Chaileybrook gimmer, Chaileybrook 16/00014. Sired by the homebred Chaileybrook 13/0001 ‘Tadpole’ she is out of a daughter of TC10187 ‘Sarkozy’ and sold in-lamb to Chaileybrook 17/00032. She sold to Megan Chilcott, East Huntspill, Somerset.

Then at the same money was a ‘Pick of Flush’ lot, offering the buy the choice of lamb from an ET flush from Chaileybrook 15/00010, the female and reserve champion from the Southdown Society’s 125th anniversary show and sired by Poillot 40036 ‘Percheron’. This offering, believed to be a UK first in the sheep industry sold to Nigel Barrington Fuller, Weeley Heath, Essex.

Two from Sid Cook’s Brant flock then sold for 450gns, with the first being Brant 14/00239, a daughter of Wattisfield 11/00081 and out of a dam by Wattisfield 09/155. She sold in-lamb to TC50119 ‘Ibanez’ and was taken by Joshua Jack, Little Horwood, Milton Keynes.

The final 450gns call came for Brant 15/00297, a daughter of TC10187 ‘Sarkozy’ and out of Brant 12/00148, a daughter of Chaileybrook 09/0002. She was the choice of Rookery Farm, Suffolk.
