National Premier Southdown Show & Sale

Held at WORCESTER on Saturday September 6th, 2008

The inaugural Show and Sale at Worcester was well attended by vendors, with a total of 80 sheep entered and 71 present on the day. Members had travelled from as far afield as Yorkshire, Cornwall and Norfolk to support this new venue.

The enthusiasm of the vendors did not match that of the buyers and a number of sheep travelled home again from whence they had come. The weather conspired against us: torrential rain and the threat of flooding on major roads in the run up to the Sale prevented a number of potential buyers from attending.

Judge Jim Cresswell had a pleasing number of quality sheep before him in the Show classes prior to the Sale. From a strong field he selected a Heathgate shearling ewe from Denis Jenkins as his overall Champion, with a shearling ram from the East Dean flock of D. S. & P. Humphrey as his Reserve Champion.

Reserve Champion male was a shearling ram from the Chaileybrook flock of J. M. A. Long. Reserve Champion female was an East Dean shearling ewe.

Top price of the day was 430 guineas for a ram lamb from Denis Jenkins, this ram lamb headed home with Sally and Sid Taylor. The Reserve Champion shearling ram from D. S. & P. Humphrey made the top adult ram price of 290 guineas.

The Champion Southdown, a Heathgate shearling ewe, made 200 guineas, the top female price of the day. Top selling ewe lamb was from the East Dean flock of D. S. & P. Humphrey, which sold for 90 guineas.
