| After just seven years' experience of rearing sheep, Judith Thomas from
Rhosirwaun on the Llyn peninsula has won the top prize in the Southdown Best
Ram Lamb category at the Royal Welsh Show. At the beginning some may have teased her and referred to her as "Little Bo Peep", but her hard work and dedica tion certainly impressed the judges in the Royal Welsh main ring. Even so Judith was quite shocked by her success. "I was shaking so much as I left the ring, I really hadn't thought we had a chance of winning", said Judith. "We've had a good deal of success at the local shows, but the Royal Welsh is something else. It came as a wonderful surprise when we found out the result," she added. |

| Judith had no experience of rearing sheep until a local farmer deemed her
suitable to hand-rear a pet lamb. "I'd never touched a sheep before then, but after that I just loved to care for them," said Judith. Since then she has moved on to concentrate on rearing Southdowns. Ten out of her 16 sheep are of that breed. "The first Southdown I got was a pedigree, and so with a little persuasion from a friend I decided to show it at local shows," she said. "Then in 2000 we won fifth place, but then the foot-and-mouth outbreak meant that we didn't compete for a couple of years. Now we've won the first prize," added Judith. However, she remained very modest when asked for the secret of her success. "I've been so very lucky in that the sheep I've had have been so wonderful. It gives me great satisfaction to prepare the sheep before the shows," she said. Next up for Judith and her prize-winning ram lamb "Paul" will be the Anglesey Agricultural Show, at the end of next month. |

| Judith Thomas writes: "I now know that selective breeding and feeding are essential but by sheer luck the pretty faces I fell in love with came from good breeders. For any beginner good friends willing to teach are a must and I have made many good friends in the Southdown Society. I think I must have pushed Lynne and Thomas Rowlands' patience to the limit when they were teaching me to trim ready for the shows." |
