Advertisements for stock for sale
Apart from the Flock advertisements shown on the breeders' page, breeders can now place a small, simple
advertisement in the Stock for Sale now category
for the sum of £5, and the advertisement will go up on the website as soon
as payment has been received by the Secretary. Each advertisement lasts for
three months, after which it will automatically be removed, or this can be done
sooner if the animals are sold and you let the Secretary know.
At the Council Meeting in October, 2006 the decision was made to publish the
Flock Book on an annual basis. This means that all registrations must be in
before the end of the year. The cut off date is December 31st each year.

Southdown Groups Around the Country
At the Southdown Council meeting on the 20th October, 2004 discussion took
place on an idea put forward by the Chairman, Alan Mummery, that we should
consider forming groups of Southdown members throughout the United Kingdom. For
many years it was thought that the majority of Southdown breeders were in
Sussex and Kent. There are a substantial number of the nearly 300 members in
the South East, but there are many elsewhere.
A pilot scheme was started and several Groups are now holding events.
Co-ordinators of the Groups and the planned events for 2007 can be

Rules of the Southdown Sheep Society
| 1. |
Membership of the Southdown Sheep Society means that all your
Southdowns saved and used for breeding must be individually registered in the
Flock Book and that all subscriptions and registration fees are paid. All ram
lambs and ewe lambs saved for breeding must be registered in the Flock Book by
31st December in the year of their birth. The fee for registration is set by
the Council and is £6 per ram lamb and £3 per ewe lamb. If any
Southdowns are not registered by 31st December in their year of birth they are
called non-Pedigree Southdowns and must be sold as such.
|
| 2. |
All Southdown sheep purchased must have been individually
registered by the breeder in the Flock Book and all breeders must notify the
Secretary in writing of any purchases or sales they make for breeding purposes
within one year of doing so.
|
| 3. |
The Council decide the rate of subscription, which is at
present £32 on joining and £26 payable annually on 1st January in
advance each year. All new members will receive a Registered Flock Number,
which must be used on the ear tag, and they will choose a prefix for their
Southdowns that can be used providing the name is not used by another member.
In addition on the ear tag the year letter will be used and the individual
number of the sheep. Any requirement of the Ministry of Agriculture or any
other official body as to ear tags will also be used. Tattoos may be used
instead of ear tags but the Secretary must be notified in writing.
|
| 4. |
No Southdown can be individually registered in the Flock Book
unless both their sire and dam are individually registered. Proof of this must
be provided at registration.
|
| 5. |
No headage charge will be paid to the Society by members except
the levy deducted by Auctioneers etc. at official sales.
|
| 6. |
Exportation of Southdowns can only be done if they have been
individually registered in the Flock Book by 31st December in their year of
birth. An Export Certificate must be obtained from the Secretary at a cost of
£10 per Southdown and the sum of 5p in every pound of the sale price shall
be paid to the Secretary within 6 months of the sale.
|
| 7. |
The Flock Book is published by the Society when the Council
decides. At the moment it is every two years. A copy is sent to all members who
are up to date with their subscriptions.
|
| 8. |
Late registration is only allowed to be made by the breeder by
31st December in the second year from birth. The cost will be £20 per
Southdown.
|
| 9. |
Council has the right to inspect any flock with or without
notice and without giving a reason should they so wish. The decision of the
Council is final in any dispute. All members are deemed to have accepted these
Rules after being sent a copy of them and not making any comment to the
Secretary in writing within six months.

| Approved by the Council 16th October 2000 and 31st October
2001 |

EU Commission Decision 2005/375/EEC of the 11 May 2005
Criteria governing entry in flock books for pure bred breeding sheep already
(Decision 90/255/EEC) stated that a sheep can only be entered in Flock Books
provided it has been descended from parents and grandparents already entered in
the Flock Book, can be identified after birth according to the rules of the
book and has a pedigree established in accordance with the rules of the book
The new decision 2005/375 states that if sheep do not meet this criteria they
can be entered in an Annex to the Flock Book BUT this must be in the interest
of protection of animal genetic resources and must be approved before entry by
a competent authority.
