Despite the uncertainty leading up to the Melton Mowbray Show and Sale this year due to the FMD restrictions, trade for Southdowns was pleasing, and prices reflected the quality and availability of the sheep forward on the day.
Top price of the day - £285 - was paid for a shearling ram from the East Dean flock of D. S. & P. Humphrey. The highest priced female was a shearling ewe from Messrs. Wakeham-Dawson & Harmer; this ewe was the Champion Southdown, making £270.
Quality lambs saw a brisk trade, with J. Mark Hawtin taking home the top money of the day for both his ewe lamb at £160, and his ram lamb at £270. Mrs. Lynne Rowlands achieved top price of the day in the aged ewe class (£90).
Average prices:
Aged ewes: £76
Shearling ewes: £132
Ewe lambs: £100
Rams: £239
Ram lambs: £210
