Jonathan Long's Shearling Ram
Champion Maidstone Southdown Show and Sale
Sold for 500 Guineas

An improved quality entry for the 2nd Annual Early Southdown Sheep Society Sale met a brisk trade with bidders eager to compete for the quality on offer. The overall Champion of the Show and Sale was Jonathan Long's much admired shearling ram, Chaileybrook 04/0003, an ARR/ARR twin lamb by well known Brant ewe U470 (1998) sire. Keen bidding from a number of breeders saw the lamb realize 500 guineas. The Reserve Champion on the day was awarded to Wakeham Dawson & Harmer's shearling ewe, Ridings 04/0029 which changed hands for 270 guineas.

A handful of older ewes sold to a top of 90 guineas and the keenest trade of the day was reserved for the shearling ewes with the 23 on offer leveling at £178.74 with a top of 270 guineas for the Show's Reserve Champion Ridings 04/0029. The 8 from the Wakeham Dawson & Harmer's Riding Flock sold to level at £231. A handful of ewe lambs sold to a top of 140 guineas for Messrs Clark & Littmoden's Strawberry Down 05/055 lamb selling to Brian Rideout of Farnham.

Amongst the shearling rams there was a selective trade with breeders' quality rams selling very readily to a top of 510 guineas for D S & P Humphreys' East Dean 04/0030, the purchasers being Goodwood Estates, Goodwood, West Sussex. Another breeder quality ram sold readily in the 300 - 350 guineas mark although commercial buyers were thinner on the ground at this early stage of the season.

Of the older tups, the 1998 born Brant U470 of 1998, the sire of the Champion, consigned by Jonathan Long, sold for 200 guineas.

His sire East Dean Z30 was purchased privately in 2002 as a shearling and sired Chaileybrook C13, one of the finest females bred in the Chaileybrook flock - female and reserve breed champion South of England Show 2004. His lambs also won first prize alive and dead at Smithfield 2004.

A late born lamb out of one of the flock's finest ewes. This lamb is a well fleshed sheep with plenty of scope for growth and power. Brant U470 was purchased privately as a lamb and was male and reserve breed champion at the Royal Show as a shearling. A11 is by Steepdown L24, a breeder of tremendous females for the flock. L24 was a son of the legendary French ram Thomas.

Brant U470 was purchased privately as a lamb and was male and reserve breed champion Royal Show 1999 as a shearling. U470 is still as fit as the day He was bought and has been used extensively in the Chaileybrook flock and has sired many quality sheep. His lambs have also been particularly successful in primestock shows. His sire G32 was widely regarded as one of the finest rams of his generation.
