National Southdown Sheep Breeders' Premier Show & Sale, 2009

Held at Maidstone Market, Kent on Saturday 1st August 2009

Judge: E J Cresswell : Auctioneer: Alan Mummery

The Lambert & Foster official report:–

Now established as a regular fixture on the Southdown Sheep Society’s Calendar, the Maidstone Early Show and Sale was well supported with 90 sheep entered for sale. Jonathan Long’s Chailey Brook Flock from Brook in Kent led the way in both the Show and Sale with a brisk demand for virtually all the Chailey Brook breeding stock on offer. Male Champion and Overall Sale Champion was the Shearling Ram Chailey Brook 08/0010, son of Long’s imported sire TC4028 of France. The ram sold for 420 guineas to Mr A Coulter who made the long journey to Maidstone from the Scottish Borders.

The Reserve Overall Champion and Female Champion was Wakeham Dawson & Harmer’s Shearling Ewe Ridings 08/1049 which later sold for 240 guineas to Mo Williams, High Peak, Derbyshire. The standard of the Show Classes were as high as they have been for many years with quality and depth in both the Shearling Ewe and Shearling Ram Classes.

The post Show Sale saw quality sheep meeting demand with individual sections yielding the following results.

Older Ewes

A handful of older ewes sold to variable demand topping 170 guineas for Jonathan Long’s 2006 born ewe Chailey Brook 06/0021. The buyer was Mr A Coulter.

Shearling Ewes

Keen demand throughout with 18 changing hands to average 158 guineas. Leading the way was another Chailey Brook entry, Chailey Brook 08/0008, a second prize winner and she joins the Bulmers in Yorkshire. Other notable consignments included Wakeham Dawson & Harmer’s 5 prepared shearlings which all sold to level at 217 guineas a piece.

Ewe Lambs

A great selection of ewe lambs with strong well grown lamb from P A & R A H Whitcombe Southern Cross flock winning the pre-Show Class, selling for 150 guineas to Judge Jim Cresswell. Highest price, however, was reserved for another Southern Cross entry that sold for 180 guineas, again to Mr Coulter. The 11 ewe lambs forward averaged 111 guineas.

Shearling Rams

The best shown for some years and the best trade to match. 13 rams sold to average 413 guineas and setting the standard was Jonathan Long’s Chailey Brook 08/0016 which had previously been Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Show 2009 which sold for 590 guineas to Kevin Hawes, Hartfield, East Sussex. P A & R A H Whitcombe’s 3 shearlings sold to a top of 580 guineas to average 570 guineas. Commercial quality tups were in demand selling in the range of 280—350 guineas.

Ram Lambs

A handful forward led by the impeccably bred Chailey Brook 09/0002, a well bred cocktail of New Zealand and French breeding which was snapped up by Society Secretary Gail Sprake at 300 guineas.
