SALE REPORT

A good entry of 89 head was catalogued for the 4th National Premier Early Breeders Sale at Maidstone Market last Saturday. Following last year's last minute abandonment because of the Foot and Mouth crisis, it was good to see a good company of sellers from the South and East of England.

Taking the pre-sale show honours was Jim Cresswell's Aged Ram Ladywell 06/174. Originally purchased by Mr. Cresswell with a view to exporting him to Northern Ireland this plan was thwarted by Blue Tongue restrictions and, having used him sparingly last season, he had to be re-sold. He was sold for 450 guineas to Moira William's Pindale Flock in High Peak, Derbyshire. The Reserve Overall Show Champion was Jonathan Long's Shearling Ram.

In the Female Section, Wakeham-Dawson & Harmer's Shearling Ewe was judged to be Champion, later selling for 220 guineas, again to the Williams' Pindale Flock.

Generally the sale was well attended although bidding was certainly more cautious than at previous fixtures. Amongst a selection of older flock Ewes we peaked for a 2 shear ewe from Wakeham-Dawson & Harmer selling for 120 guineas with the bulk making between 80 and 100 guineas. A good selection of Shearling Ewes was led by Wakeham-Dawson & Harmer's Female Champion at 220 guineas with a Southern Cross Shearling from P. & R. Whitcombe close behind at 205 guineas and Dennis Jenkins' Shearling 200 guineas. A small selection of Ewe Lambs peaked at 175 guineas for C & P Mannering's second prize Ewe Lamb and most of the sales falling between 100 and 120 guineas.

In the Shearling Ram department D. & M. Crundwell's Ladywell 07/183 was placed second in the Shearling Ram class but attracted the days highest bid of 550 guineas selling to Dennis Jenkins' Heathgate flock. Notable prices were achieved by Jonathan Long with his part French bred Shearling at 360 guineas , P. & R. Whitcombe's Shearling at 290 guineas but the bulk of the entry sold in the region of 200 to 250 guineas. Jonathan Long's third prize Ram Lamb reached top spot in the Auction amongst the Ram Lambs at 300 guineas, with the largest selection of Aged Rams for some time met a solid commercial demand with several selling in the region of 250 to 300 guineas.

In summary it was good to see a bigger company of commercial buyers around the ring for the Rams but it was noted that over conditioned sheep were both penalised in the Show and Sale ring.
