FROM THE M5: Come off at Junction 27 and take the A361 North Devon link road towards Barnstaple. Continue past the first turning to Tiverton until you come to a large roundabout. Turn left towards Tiverton and follow the signs for Witheridge and the B3137. Continue for about 6 miles along this road and take a small left fork turning, marked 'Puddington' and 'Black Dog'. Continue along this road (about 5 miles), bearing right in Puddington until you come to the pub at Black Dog and the crossroads. Turn left, and carry on until you see a small white tollhouse, after which is a left turn marked 'Creedy Mill', 'Stockleigh English' and 'Cheriton Fitzpayne'. Continue along this very narrow road and take the first turning to the right (hidden by a bend) marked 'Stockleigh English'. Go down the hill past Binniford Farm and up the hill again. The road forks at the top, marked 'East Village'. Take the right fork and continue for about one mile; the road then begins to go down. Downhayne is on your left!

From Exeter: take the A377 to Crediton. At Crediton follow the one-way system heading for Tiverton. As you begin to leave Crediton and as you pass Mile Avon (store for farmers) on your left, take the left turn immediately after for Sandford. Follow the signs for 'Sandford'. On reacing Sandford (approx. 2 miles) drive up the hill and follow the bends first right and then left. On reaching the church, turn right and follow the signs for 'East Village'. East Village is approx. 2¾ miles further on down a single-track road. On reaching East Village, drive on until you come to the first white house on the left on the roadside, after which is a small crossroads. Turn left marked 'Woolfard'y'. Drive on down another narrow (sometimes very muddy) road, past a disused quarry on your right and over a small ford. Continue up the hill and, when almost to the top, you reach Downhayne on your right.

From the West: take the A377 to Crediton. About 3 miles from Crediton, you come to a sign on the right marked 'Coleford' and 'Colebrook' and 'Recycling Depot'. Pass that, and almost immediately take a left turn. (Opposite is a green sign for the A377 for Crediton and Barnstaple called 'Barnstaple Cross'). Continue down this road (passing a garden nursery on your right and a vet's surgery - Johnathan Wood - on your left) until you come to a crossroad. Take a left turn marked 'Sandford 1, Black Dog 6'. When you come to the village of Sandford, drive up the hill and follow the bends first right and then left. On reaching the church, turn right and follow the signs for 'East Village'. East Village is approx. 2¾ miles further on down a single-track road. On reaching East Village, drive on until you come to the first white house on the left on the roadside, after which is a small crossroads. Turn left left marked 'Woolfard'y'. Drive on down another narrow (sometimes very muddy) road, past a disused quarry on your right and over a small ford. Continue up the hill and, when almost to the top, you come to Downhayne on your right.
