The Broadreed Flock of H J Paynter - End of an ERA

105 years and three generation of Paynter's breeding Southdowns ended with Jane Paynter hanging up her wellies and selling the well known Broadreed Flock Number FIVE, twelve ewes, four shearlings and five ewe lambs to Mark Hawtin of Stowe Heights Farm, Weedon. Northampton.

Mark Hawtin started his flock with Broadreed ewes in 1987. The Broadreed flock has been bred to the traditional type with no imported blood lines except two years of the New Zealand Te Arie ram back in 1977/78.

The majority of the major prizes have been won by Broadreed over the 105 span of years. Leading rams from the top flocks were used along with home bred rams.

The Paynter family would like to wish Mark the very best of luck with this flock.

Jane Paynter, June 2003

The Broadreed Flock

Flock Number 5 started in 1898 with ewes from J. W. Woods of Chilgrove and the Duke of Richmond. In 1905 forty ewes were purchased from Lord Northbourne and in 1906 twenty five ewes from J. Tomkins. Rams were used from the Duke of Richmond, J. P. Hipkin, G. Peel, Col. H. McCalmont, J. Hogen and Col. T. Hammond. (For more details on the Flock, click here)

The whole flock was sold in May, 2003 to J. Mark Hawtin, Flock No 308

The BROADREED Flock of Southdown Sheep
The Broadreed Flock Number 5 of the Southdown Sheep Society was founded in 1898 and is for sale as a whole flock. The owner is retiring and this gives a rare opportunity to buy the oldest bloodlines in the country. There is no French blood and no Australian blood in the flock and only a small amount of New Zealand blood from the 1977/1978 season (Ram Te Ari)

Report of Sale of Rare, Minority and Tradional Breeds at Newark Livestock Market on Saturday, 31st August 2002

This sale was held primarily for Breeders to move their stock and was organised by the Lincolnshire Support Group of the RBST when advised that the Show and Sale would not go ahead at Stoneleigh. It was felt that there was a need to have a sale in the Midlands/East of the country, and Newark was an ideal choice being only 1 mile off the A1 with excellent facilities.

The Sale was a great success. Approximately 300 people were round the ring! The Lincolnshire Longwool Sheep Breeders' Association and the Norfolk Horn Breeders' Group designated this Sale as their Official Sale for 2002. There were 22 entries for cattle - 5 breeds. The top price was 640 gns. for a Dexter cow. 15 pigs - top price 180 gns. for a Berkshire gilt. Approximately 220 sheep. Top price was 500 gns. for a Norfolk Horn Ram. 47 Southdowns entered with 27 lots NOT forward. Highest price Southdown was 140 gns.

The feedback was: an excellent sale - good to be with like people once again - first-class facilities - easy to get to - satisfied with prices - plenty of buyers - you will do this again next year!

The 2003 Newark Sale will be in mid-August, 2003, to allow for the 20 day standstill.

Information - Maureen Turner, tel. 01673 857363.
