History of the Southdown1902 |

Col. Sir Nigel F. Kingscote, G.C.V.O., K.C.B., President, 1902 |
| This was the twelfth of the series of
Southdown Flock Books and since the publication of the Eleventh Volume, notice
has been received of the dispersal of nine Registered Flocks, whilst sixteen
new flocks have been accepted for registration, and are duly entered in the
present volume. The total number of flocks registered in vol. 12 is 131, being
a net increase of seven on the year. These 131 flocks comprise a total of
40,400 breeding Ewes. .As regards the Society generally, it may be said that it continues to make steady progress, just as the Breed itself shows a steady advance in favour, both at home and abroad. New ground has been broken in Ireland, where at the last Ballsbridge Show, the much-coveted Challenge Cup for the best pen of sheep was awarded to a pen of Southdowns, bred in the registered flock of Mr. C.M. Doyne. From New Zealand come most encouraging reports of the progress made in that Colony by the Southdowns, which are stated to have increased during the last few years at a greater rate than any other breed, and to be undoubtedly the best sheep for getting, from long-woolled ewes, both lamb and mutton for the English market. Such diverse countries as France, Russia, Chili, and Mexico have taken Southdowns; whilst Australia, Canada, the United States, Spain and Portugal have had their share during the past year. 12, Hanover Square, London, W., June, 1903 |
