History of the Southdown1901 |

| The Southdown Flock Book for 1902, which covered the events of 1901, was Volume XI and the sixth published under the auspices of the Southdown Sheep Society, volumes 1 to 5 having been published by the Southdown Sheep Breeders Association. The 1902 Flock Book covered rams with the registration numbers from 4288 to 4696 and ewes 2170 to 2406, and 124 registered flocks, comprising a total of 39,200 breeding ewes. | |

| This flock was started very early in the last century by Mr. Robert Doyne, who won two silver medals offered by "The Farming Society of Ireland" (established 1800), for "the best of the prize Southdown Rams" and "the best Southdown Ewe" exhibited at the Show at Ballinasloe, October, 1814. The flock was continued by Mr. Robert S. Doyne and his son, the present owner, who imported rams from some of the best breeders in England, but no ewes were added except from the flock of Mr. Robert Watson, M.F.H., Ballydarton, Co. Carlow, some time in the seventies. | |
| Rams have been purchased from Lord Walsingham, the Duke of Richmond, Mr. C. J. Fletcher, Sir Nigel Kingscote, and others, whilst in 1900 and 1901 a Ram was used bred by Mr. Adeane. | |

| This flock was founded in 1899 by purchases from the flocks of Mr. J.J. Colman, Mr. Henry Webb and Mr. Robert Page. Ewes were subsequently obtained at the sales of Mr. J.A. Hempson and Mr. George Courtauld. | |

| The flock was established in 1875 by Ewes purchased from Mr. H. Sadler of Langford. It has been replenished yearly with Ewes from the flocks of the Duke of Richmond, Mr. W. Woodman, Mr. H. Penfold, and Mr. F.N. Hobgen. Rams have been selected with the greatest care from the flocks of the Duke of Richmond, Mr. H. Penfold, and Mr. F.N. Hobgen; whilst of late years Rams have been used solely from the flocks of the Duke of Richmond, Mr. Penfold, and the Pagham Harbour Co. | |

| This flock was established in 1885 by the purchase of 300 Ewes and 100 Ewe Lambs at the dispersal of the late Mr. Edward Sainsbury's flock at West Lavington, Devizes. Ten Ewe Lambs were bought at Mr. Herbert Senior's sale in 1901. | |
| The Rams used since 1885 came from the flocks of the late Mr. Henry Fookes, of Whitechurch, Blandford, Mr. H. Penfold, Mr. W. Toop, Lord Allington, Mr. H. Senior, and Mr. George Peel. | |

| This flock was founded in 1896 on Mr. James taking Brick Kiln Farm into his own hands, by the purchase of 100 Ewes bred by the Duke of Richmond at Goodwood, 150 Ewes bred by Sir Penistone Milbanke at Eartham, Chichester, and five Rams bred by Mr. W. Toop. In the same year 50 Ewe Lambs, bred by Sir P. Milbanke, were bought, and since that time the following additions have been made to the flock, viz.:- In 1897, 100 Ewes bred by Sir P. Milbanke; 1898, 48 Ewes and their Lambs, bred by the Duke of Richmond; 1899, 90 Ewes bred by Sir P. Milbanke; and 1901, 25 Ewes and 10 Ewe Lambs bred by Mr. J.W. Woods of Chilgrove, Chichester, and purchased at the dispersal sale of his flock at East Marden. | |
| The Rams used have always been carefully selected from well-known flocks, including those of Mr. W. Toop, Mr. F.N. Hobgen, Pagham Harbour Co., Mr. A. Heasman, the Duke of Richmond, and Mr. H. Penfold. | |

| This flock, founded in 1859, is part of one
belonging to the late Mr. Henry Upton, of Aldwick, Bognor, established by the
purchase of Ewes from Mr. Padwick. Rams were used from the flocks of the Duke
of Richmond, Lord Walsingham, Mr. H. Penfold, Mr. Emery, Mr. Kent, Mr. Rushby,
Pagham Harbour Co., Mr. Heasman, Mr. Colman, Mr. Gorringe, Mr. Hart, Mr.
Pinnix, Mr. Newman, Mr. Ellis, Mr. Robert Drewitt, &c. In 1889, at the death of Mr. Henry Upton, the late Mr. Sidney Upton came into possession of the best of the flock, the remainder being sold by auction. The Binsted flock now numbers 313 Ewes, and about 100 of the best Ewe tegs are drafted annually into the flock. For the last few years, Rams from the Pagham Harbour Co., Mr. J.P. Hipkin, and Mr. Heasman have been used. |
